News Bulletin 650: Local victory - Chelsea remains one!

Dear Resident,

I hope this finds you well.

This week we can celebrate a fantastic local victory.

The Boundaries Commission for England released their revised proposal for the 2023 Review which will see the London region change from 73 to 75 parliamentary constituencies. Chelsea will remain united with Fulham, as it has been since 2010.

You will recall the huge local campaign late last year to keep Chelsea in one parliamentary constituency. The revised proposals confirm that there will be no ‘West Chelsea’ and ‘East Chelsea’ as originally proposed by the Boundary Commission. Whilst I campaigned hard on this important issue, this fantastic result could not have been achieved without the staggering 1,200 representations made by individual residents, resident associations and other local stakeholders in opposition to the initial proposals.

As the local Member of Parliament, I made a substantial written submission to the Boundary Commission, which was quoted multiple times, and spoke at the public hearing, too. Together with my constituency neighbour Felicity Buchan, MP for Kensington, and the local Conservative Party, I put forward a detailed counter-proposal.

In their report, the Boundary Commission noted that they had recognised the strength of opposition to their initial proposal and that they recommend that our counter-proposal should be adopted in full!

This means that the constituency will remain as ‘Chelsea & Fulham’ with Chelsea all in one constituency. The Fulham wards Fulham Reach and West Kensington will be added to make up a total estimated electorate of 76,481.

Yours,
Greg Hands

The Rt Hon Greg Hands MP
Member of Parliament for Chelsea & Fulham
