Basement extensions are common issue of concern in Chelsea. The Royal Borough was one of the first local authorities to introduce controls on basement developments and has been reviewing its policy in recent months. A consultation on its revised planning policy is now open.
The consultation runs until Thursday 31 January 2013, and the Council expects to adopt its new basement policy by the end of next year.
Councillor Tim Ahern, the Royal Borough’s Cabinet Member for Planning, said: “The Royal Borough is one of the most densely populated parts of the country and basement extensions are often chosen by homeowners as a way of increasing the size of their property.
“We are determined to get this aspect of development right and want residents to have their say on our revised basement policy.”
Greg Hands M.P. added: “I know many of my Chelsea constituents have strong views on basement developments. Because of the disruption to neighbours, some of these schemes have become extremely controversial.
“This consultation is welcome and I urge anyone with an interest to take part.”
