Greg Hands MP welcomes the latest increase in District Line capacity. He learned more about this great news on an amazing visit to the Earl’s Court signalling centre to see the phasing out of old 1950's technology. Greg and Transport for London officials discussed how new signalling technology is already greatly increasing capacity on the District Line and Piccadilly Line, which is to the huge benefit of his constituents in Chelsea and Fulham.
Peak time maximum capacity on the Wimbledon branch District Line will increase from 15 to 16 trains per hour - a 7% increase.
As many will know, one of Greg’s longest standing campaigns has been to improve the capacity and frequency of District Line tubes.
Over the years, Greg has campaigned successfully for extra capacity and frequency such as in 2011 when more rush-hour trains were introduced through Fulham during the morning peak, in 2014 when the new S-Class Tube trains came into operation for the first time on the Wimbledon branch Line and much more.
Improving signalling has always been a priority for Greg and to see first-hand how this new signalling technology and infrastructure is increasing capacity is brilliant.
On the visit, Greg also got the opportunity to join the tube driver in the cab, travelling three stops. It was a great experience for Greg to get a driver’s view of the District Line!
Commenting, Greg Hands said:
‘’Increasing District Line capacity and frequency is one of my longest standing campaigns. Over the years, I have successfully campaigned for more rush-hour trains, new S-Class Tube trains and most recently, improved signalling technology.
This latest success means peak time maximum capacity on the Wimbledon branch District Line will increase from 15 to 16 trains per hour - a 7% increase.
This is great news for Chelsea and Fulham residents who deserve access to reliant and frequent tube services.’’
