Greg Hands MP has welcomed new figures showing that the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in Chelsea & Fulham has fallen by 395, over the last year alone. Since 2010, under this Government, the number of local people on unemployment benefits has fallen by 758 locally.
The figures also show that, nationally, employment (those in work) has reached 30.43 million - up 283,000 this quarter, and up 1.59 million since the election. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate has fallen to 6.8 per cent - down from 8% in May 2010.
Jobs have been created in Chelsea and Fulham in places like TNT Post UK’s new delivery unit in The Old Gas Works, Parsons Green. Last October, 75 new postmen were recruited from the local area when the depot opened. The Fulham depot joined five other new TNT Post delivery units in the South West London area, providing a new delivery service to local residents and businesses. Over 500 new jobs have been created by TNT since June 2013.
Greg said: “It’s great news there are now 395 fewer people on unemployment benefit in Chelsea and Fulham over the last year. That’s 395 people no longer relying on benefits to get by, with a more secure, brighter future ahead of them.
“With the economy growing and jobs being created by businesses like TNT in Parsons Green as just one example, and other local businesses are setting up and expanding. It’s clear the Conservatives’ long-term economic plan is working, and the foundations of a broad based recovery are in place. We need to keep working through the plan, which is creating jobs, giving more to people who want to work hard and get on the security of a regular pay packet they can bring home to their families.”
