The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has held a consultation on introducing a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to help tackle the problem of ‘supercars’ in and around Knightsbridge.
The consultation was in response to requests from residents in the Brompton and Hans Town ward for the Council to address the issue of high performance cars speeding in the streets, drivers revving engines, and vehicles causing obstructions.
A PSPO is a new measure, created by the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, which is intended to deal with activities carried out in a public space that have a detrimental effect to the local community’s quality of life. This PSPO would enable the Council to impose restrictions within a particular area, and the aim is to stop individuals or groups committing antisocial behaviour in public spaces.
You can find out more about where the proposed control zone will be located and what it means, at www.rbkc.gov.uk/pspo.
The Council held information drop-in sessions at the following venues: Hans Crescent, next to Harrods on Wednesday 12 August 2015; Brompton Library on Tuesday 8 September 2015; and Hans Crescent again on Thursday 17 September.
Member of Parliament for Chelsea and Fulham, Greg Hands, said: “I have heard at first hand from residents around Sloane Square of the hazards of this noisy, nocturnal nuisance. I am glad to see the Council taking swift action.”
Cllr Tim Ahern, Cabinet Member for Environment, Environmental Health and Leisure, said: “I know there has been a lot of coverage of expensive cars racing around Knightsbridge and also parking up and revving their engines. We want to take steps to discourage these drivers from their antisocial behaviour.”
The consultation has now closed, and feedback, comments, and evidence provided for the proposal for a PSPO are now being considered. A final report will be available online at the end of October.
